Notes: | In 1685, William Douglas of Fingland, Scotland, composed these verses to his ladylove, the beautiful "bonnie" Annie Laurie, daughter of Sir Robert Laurie, first baronet of Maxwellton. A century later,Lady John Scott wrote the music, publishing it in 1838. During the Crimean War it became hugely popular with the troops, to this day remains one of the world's best known love songs. |
