Notes: | This 16th-century French carol is traditionally associated with the Provence region of France. ...the narrator is calling to two people to bring a light. Tradition has it that Jeanette and Isabella are milkmaids who discover the baby Jesus and run out to tell the villagers. The carol was first published in France, and was subsequently translated into English in the 18th century. The song was originally not a song to be sung at Christmas, but rather dance music for French nobility. |
